Researchers at Kyushu University have developed a method to produce hydrogen gas by mixing methanol, sodium hydroxide, and iron ions, then exposing it to ultraviolet light. This method achieved a hydrogen production rate of 921 mmol per hour per gram of catalyst, comparable to existing complex catalysts. The approach may also work with other alcohols and biomass-derived materials, suggesting potential for low-cost hydrogen production.
